This is the issue new CTO Jack Heaton had to deal with when he joined the company.

“I've been with the company for about 18 months now and we had some much older legacy software that was in dire need of user experience improvements. So one of the first things I began working on was revamping our UX, including our website and app experience.”

One part of the equation was to build a mobile-friendly web experience. One the other side, Jack was wondering whether the effort required to fix their app was worth it.

“At that time we did have a native application that was poorly reviewed. It was frequently broken, didn’t have a lot of users, and we were actually planning on just sunsetting it and shutting it down.”

They decided to move ahead with the app, but had to do so in a way that wouldn’t blow out their budget (or their workflow).

“From our perspective, we were very constrained on resources so we didn't want the overhead of having to maintain multiple code bases for a traditional native app.”

The Solution

He considered cross-platform development, but this too was more complex than he wanted.

“We looked at things like React Native, but at the end of the day, they really become a separate code base anyway. There are some things that are shared between the code base, but it's not as easy as a single code base where you make a change and it propagates to all your platforms.”
