Frontend Designer (App Customizations)

Remote, Eastern Europe preferred · Contractor

About MobiLoud

MobiLoud helps established ecommerce brands turn their existing websites into iOS and Android apps, without rebuilding their product or managing two separate systems.

We work with ecommerce businesses doing real volume that want a direct mobile channel they actually own. Our customers use MobiLoud to lift retention, recover abandoned carts through push, and reduce their dependence on paid acquisition.

We’re a bootstrapped, profitable, remote-first SaaS company founded in 2013. We’ve served 2,000+ brands and have hundreds of active customers today, including Estée Lauder, John Varvatos, Jack & Jones, and Tadashi Shoji. 13 years profitable. We’ve never raised a round, and we never need to. Our team is 16 people, all remote, all hands-on, all trusted to work independently.

The role

We’re hiring a Frontend Designer to own CSS and UI customizations on the apps we build for our merchants. The work runs across every customer in our portfolio: making the merchant’s existing website look and feel right inside the native app, building custom screens via our admin panel, designing reusable frontend components the rest of the team can plug into new launches, and writing code samples for the merchant’s own dev team when a change has to live in their codebase.

This is a hands-on CSS and frontend role with a strong design eye, not a software engineering role. We need someone who can look at a merchant’s app, see what’s not landing visually, and ship the fix the same day. Most of the work is direct CSS, light JavaScript, and Liquid or theme code. You’re not writing React apps and you’re not handing designs off to someone else; you’re the one shipping pixels into production.

You’ll work across customer apps, not inside one. One day it’s tightening a checkout layout on a Shopify storefront so it lays out cleanly inside the app. The next it’s building a custom onboarding screen for a fashion brand’s promo. The next it’s writing a Liquid snippet for the merchant’s dev team to drop into their theme. You report to the Head of Product and Operations and sit on the engineering team alongside the mobile dev and the frontend & integrations dev.

AI coding tools are part of how this team works. Claude Code, Codex, and Cursor are daily. If you ship CSS and frontend with these tools fluently already, you’ll feel at home.

What you’ll do

  • Design and ship CSS / JavaScript overlays that customize how a merchant’s website renders inside the app: layout tweaks, conditional hiding, app-only flows, responsive fixes
  • Build custom app screens via our admin panel: promo pages, onboarding, brand-specific surfaces that don’t exist on the web
  • Build and maintain a library of reusable frontend components and CSS patterns the team can pull from for every new launch
  • Write Liquid (Shopify) and PHP/WordPress theme snippets when a customization has to live in the merchant’s own codebase, and document them so the merchant’s dev team can maintain them
  • Debug rendering issues across iOS WebView and Android WebView, real devices, and the merchant’s live website
  • Coordinate with the mobile dev when a customization needs to cross into the native layer, and produce a clean handoff
  • Pair with the Customer Success Manager and Implementation Manager when a merchant’s growth play needs a frontend customization to land

Who you are

  • Two to five years building production frontend on ecommerce sites: Shopify themes, WooCommerce themes, headless ecommerce frontends, DTC brand frontend, or agency-side Shopify Plus work
  • Hands-on. You ship code. The interview will look at what you’ve actually built, not what you’ve planned
  • Deep CSS. Layout, responsive, animation, micro-interactions, the quirky bits that only show up on real devices. You can write modern CSS without reaching for a framework, and you know when a framework helps anyway
  • A real design eye. You don’t need a design degree, but you need taste. You can look at a mockup and tell whether it’ll hold up in production, and you can push back when it won’t
  • AI coding tools are a daily part of how you work. Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, or similar. If you’ve already integrated these into your CSS / frontend workflow, that’s the floor we’re hiring against
  • Light JavaScript fluency: enough to write a small interaction, debug an event, or wire up a third-party widget. This is not a React or Vue framework engineer role
  • Liquid (Shopify) experience strongly preferred. WordPress / WooCommerce theme experience a plus. You don’t need both, but you should know one well
  • Comfortable inside a webview / native app shell context, or willing to learn fast. iOS WKWebView and Android WebView quirks will come up
  • Figma comfort is a plus if you enjoy working in it. Not required - most of the work is shipping code, not producing mockups
  • Native or near-native English. Comfortable overlap with Eastern Time business hours for sync with the engineering team

What you won’t be doing

  • Writing React components for a single-page-app stack. Our frontend is the merchant’s existing website rendering inside the app, plus CSS/JS overlays on top
  • Building backend or API services. Your code lives in CSS, JS, Liquid, theme PHP, or our admin panel
  • Producing Figma mockups all day. We don’t do much pure design work; the job is shipping code with a designer’s eye
  • Managing other designers or developers. This is an individual contributor role

Why this role

  • You ship the customizations that make every new app feel like the merchant’s brand, not a stock template. The work is highly visible across our customer base
  • You work on apps for real ecommerce brands: Estée Lauder, John Varvatos, Jack & Jones, Tadashi Shoji, plus the next tier of mid-market names on Shopify, BigCommerce, Magento, and WooCommerce
  • Direct collaboration with the engineering team and the founder on tooling, process, and what gets built next. Decisions same week, not next quarter
  • Room to shape the frontend customization playbook and the component library going forward
  • Fully remote, work from anywhere in Eastern Europe with comfortable Eastern Time overlap. We have no office and no plans to open one

Not a fit if

  • You don’t have a portfolio of work we can actually look at. We need to see it
  • You only design, you don’t code. Or you only code, you don’t design. The role is the hybrid, full stop
  • You want to work in React/Vue/Svelte all day. This role is CSS, Liquid, and light vanilla JS, inside ecommerce themes
  • You want a backend or fullstack engineer track. We have a mobile dev and an integrations dev; this seat is the frontend craft seat
  • You need full-time employee benefits (healthcare, parental leave, equity). This is a contractor engagement, not employment. PTO is unlimited; the gaps are healthcare, parental leave, equity
